Electronic Cash Register / POS Machine Much more than a cash drawer, stores' electronic cash registers and point-of-sale (POS) systems are vital retail management tools. Modern electronic cash registers are integrated with POS systems to not only register sales receipts but also perform many other management functions. Electronic cash registers use advanced technologies with sensitive computer components that can easily be damaged by power surges, electrical disturbances and other equipment risks. Many stores use cash registers that are integrated with a POS system to provide the retail storeowner with a larger range of functional capabilities. These functions include order tracking, credit card authorization and electronic funds transfer and control functions for cash and other receipts. Many stores use their POS systems as a time clock for employees so they can correlate labor cost to sales volume and make adjustments to staffing. A basic model electronic cash register with a POS system can be worth $750 to over $1,000. Versions with touch screens and integrated POS systems go for $3,000 or more.
