Blood and Medical Refrigeration

Hospitals and medical centers often contain a laboratory where refrigerated reagents and refrigerated blood products are stored. The value for refrigerated laboratory reagents is normally between $5,000 to $10,000; however, large laboratories can have storage values over $50,000 per refrigerator. Medicines, blood, and certain tissues must be kept refrigerated and must be located near where the item is to be used. If refrigeration breaks down significant values of blood or medical materials may spoil. In addition to these exposures, hospital pharmacies usually have multiple refrigerators and freezers to store pharmaceuticals. Since the refrigerated pharmaceuticals may total $5,000 to $20,000 in value (or even more) the principal exposure is the risk of spoilage in the event of breakdown.
