Autoclave/Sterilizer

Autoclaves are heat sterilizing systems found in all hospitals and medical centers. They use hot steam under pressure in a closed system to sterilize medical instruments, materials and waste. Hospitals or medical centers have multiple autoclaves ranging in size from tabletop models in physicians' offices to large units for surgical centers. Autoclaves are essentially high-pressure boilers, they can contain enormous pressure and have the potential to rupture and cause significant damage to equipment and surrounding property. Because they must be loaded and unloaded frequently, autoclaves have quick opening doors with components that can become worn and may contribute to breakdown. Modern autoclaves have electronic temperature and time controls to monitor sterilization conditions and ensure cycle completion. These models with computerized controls can be damaged by power surges and other electrical disturbances. Proper training of autoclave operators and regular maintenance is critical for these pressure vessels.
