What's Cookin' at HSB?
A
Recipe for Success
Chef
hats and computers? It was an interesting mix for
the 50 boys and girls who came to Bring Your Child
to Work Day at the HSB Valley Forge office last August. And, evidently a very successful one. Children
and employees alike seemed to enjoy the various
day's events planned for them.
The activities were built around a cooking
theme, and were
invited to think about what
"ingredients" make HSB a successful company.
Penn Maid, a local dairy producer, got the day going
with a presentation on nutrition, the benefits of
calcium, the importance of exercise, and healthy
eating for a healthy mind.
The children then rotated through three activities:
-
Arts and Crafts – The children decorated aprons and made chef hats from poster board
and tissue paper.
-
Computer Fun – The children brought in
their favorite recipe, which they typed on a
computer to produce a collaborative cook book.
-
Cooking Demonstration – Chefs Steve D. Jr and Sean
from the deli at 595 E. Swedesford Road showed the
nine- to 12-year-olds how to make omelets, giving
each child an opportunity to flip an omelet in the
pan. Meanwhile, the 7- to 8-year-old group participated in a
Dirt Pudding cooking experience.
The
day ended with water ice, pretzels, and a slideshow
of the day's photographs. As a memento,
each child got a goody bag that contained a mixing
bowl, cooking utensils, and candy. In addition to
the planned activities, the children also got to
spend some time at their hosts' work stations to see
what they do at work.
